Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Certification

Certification is offered to schools that integrate environmental stewardship projects with conservation practices for buildings and grounds.  This high honor recognizes the dedication, hard work, and environmental achievements of Audubon Partner schools.  Note: Businesses that wish to pursue certification may do so through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program.

Audubon International provides a Certification Handbook to help schools document their efforts and results. There are four main criteria that must be met to become a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary:

1. Site Assessment- This includes basic information about your site to give us a snapshot of your setting and environmental resources.

2. Environmental Education and Stewardship- Audubon Partners must complete a minimum of five Audubon Partner projects, selected from at least four of the five program tracks (Wildlife, Water, Environmental Education, Eco-Efficiency, and Community/Sustainability).  Projects may include those offered through the Audubon Partners program or “Approved Free Choice” projects offered by other organizations or developed by the Audubon Partner.  A Project Report Form must be filled out for each of the five projects.

3. Operations and Maintenance: Conservation Actions- While the age and efficiency of buildings varies greatly among Audubon Partners, we encourage you to strive to incorporate conservation management strategies into building operations and maintenance.  We provide a simple self-assessment checklist to help you evaluate current practices and plan improvements.

4. Continuous Improvement- Audubon Partners make a commitment to continuous improvement in environmental stewardship and conservation management.  Recertification is required every two years.

NOTE: To keep program costs affordable, Audubon International does not require an on-site audit for schools to achieve certification.  As such, we rely on the integrity of each member to comply with program requirements and report accurate information for certification.
