    Hundreds of Volunteers Converge on Golf Courses for International Species-Counting Competition

    Golf courses around the world join third annual competition to document large diversity of species that call golf courses home

    TROY, NY – Audubon International’s BioBlitz 2017 recorded almost 2,000 unique species of animals, plants, fungi, and insects living on golf courses around the world. Hundreds of enthusiastic community volunteers, ranging from school groups to birding clubs to professional naturalists, gathered at local events between March 20th and June 21st to discover and document the species inhabiting these important green spaces.

    Christine Kane, Executive Director at Audubon International, says, “It’s wonderful to see so many golf courses around the world embracing BioBlitz as a fun and exciting way to help people spend time outdoors and learn about their local environment.”

    Now in its third year, Audubon International’s BioBlitz creates an opportunity for school children, community members, golfers, and more to take a closer look at the habitats provided on golf courses. In addition to demonstrating the large diversity of species on golf courses, the competition also engages local interest and support of the green space and recreational opportunities they provide to their towns. Participants from North America to South Africa competed for three awards for most species counted, most participants, and best photo.

    “Our participants and staff love this event and hope it continues in the coming years,” said Yank Moore, Conservation Coordinator at Jekyll Island Club, GA, the winner of the Biodiversity Award for the greatest number of species counted. Volunteers at the course spotted, identified, and listed a total of 532 species.

    Park Ridge Golf Course, FL received the Community Engagement Award for having the most participants, with a total of 144 volunteers assisting with the species count and identification. When asked about the success of their event, Phil Henry, Golf Course Manager, responded, “We struck on a really good relationship between our yearly Earth Day golf tournament and BioBlitz which allowed us to involve staff, volunteers, and tournament participants in a fun day of golf, environmental outreach, and friendly competition.”

    The Villages in Florida, one of four new sites to participate this year, won the Best Photograph contest with a spectacular photo of a bobcat. "We are delighted that this honor comes to Tom Lamb, a resident of The Villages and member of the photo club. It is particularly gratifying that his photo in this international contest draws attention to the efforts we have made over the years to make this community an environmentally sensitive one that is a good place to live for wildlife as well as our human residents," said John Rohan, Director of Recreation for The Villages.

    Check out this article in the GCSAA magazine on ACSP for Golf members Tanasi and Toqua Golf Courses at Tellico Village, TN. 

    The courses received recognition for Environmental Planning last month, and are working towards becoming Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries. They have already begun the process of increasing naturalized areas and installing bluebird boxes to provide enhanced habitat for animal species found on the courses.

    United and Audubon International are working together to relocate birds-of-prey to safer habitats and help reduce damage to aircraft

    NEW YORK, July 24, 2017 – United Airlines and its award-winning Eco-Skies program are teaming up with Audubon International, the not-for-profit environmental education organization dedicated to sustainable natural resource management, to protect raptors – including hawks, ospreys and owls – in and around New York- area airports and resettle the birds-of-prey at suitable golf course habitats where the species are more likely to thrive. 

    The United Eco-Skies Raptor Relocation Program, which the airline plans to launch at Newark Liberty International Airport later this month, will protect at-risk and threatened species such as the American kestrel by transporting the raptors to golf courses certified within the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program. As the official airline of the PGA TOUR®, United is uniquely positioned to help identify suitable golf course habitats with Audubon International for relocation purposes and help inform the public on the importance of environmental sustainability.

    Additionally, United and Audubon International will work closely with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which partners with other agencies to safely capture threatened birds at New York-area airports.

    “Audubon International is excited to be working with United Airlines’ Eco-Skies program on the Raptor Relocation Program,” said Christine Kane, Audubon International’s executive director. “Thousands of golf courses across the world have adopted environmentally sustainable property management practices that support wildlife habitat through our Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program. Bringing this all together to provide safe, high-quality habitat for raptors is a great success.” 

    “The presence of wildlife at our airports can pose a challenge to pilots operating commercial aircraft,” said Laura Francoeur, the Port Authority’s chief wildlife biologist. “The agency implements wildlife management measures to reduce these challenges, and we continue to work with our airline partners and organizations such as United and Audubon International to ensure safe operations while protecting nature.”  

    “Together with our partners at Audubon International and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, we are developing innovative ways to protect our environment and provide sanctuary for birds-of-prey that otherwise would be living near New York-area airports,” said Angela Foster-Rice, United's managing director of environmental affairs and sustainability. “The Raptor Relocation Program will help minimize risk to wildlife, reduce damage to aircraft and enable us to operate more efficiently within some of the world’s busiest airspace.”

    United’s Eco-Skies program represents the company’s commitment to the environment and the actions taken every day to create a sustainable future. In January, Air Transport World (ATW) magazine named United the Eco-Airline of the Year for the second time since the airline launched the Eco-Skies program.

     In 2016, United made history by becoming the first U.S. airline to begin use of commercial-scale volumes of sustainable aviation biofuel for regularly scheduled flights out of its hub in Los Angeles. The airline also invested $30 million in U.S.-based alternative aviation fuels developer Fulcrum BioEnergy, Inc., which represented the single largest investment by any airline globally in alternative fuels. Last year, United became first U.S. airline to repurpose items from the carrier’s international premium cabin amenity kits by partnering with Clean the World to donate hygiene products to those in critical need.

    Specialist in investment banking, real estate development and golf asset ownership and operations supports global mission of environmental care

    TROY, NY –  Henry Delozier was elected as Chairman of the Board of Directors at Audubon International at the organization’s 2017 annual meeting.

    Mr. Delozier is a Partner in Global Golf Advisors, the international specialist providing consulting services to the investment banking, real estate development and golf asset ownership and operations business segments. 

    Delozier is known across the globe for his thought leadership in golf-related businesses. He is called one of the “Most Influential People in Golf” since 1999 by the Crittenden publications, and serves as an expert source for Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Bloomberg News, Business Week, CNBC-Squawk Box, the Financial Times of London, GOLF magazine, Golf Digest, Golf Business, the New York Times, PGA Tour Network, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.

    Position Description
    The position is primarily responsible for overseeing the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP) for Golf.  The Director directly engages with a wide range of stakeholders (golf course superintendents, club managers, property managers, etc.), and reports directly to the Executive Director.

    This is a full-time exempt position, located in Troy, NY.

    Salary range is $45,000-$55,000 depending on experience.

    Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
    Program Member Service

    • Assist ACSP for Golf members in the development of management plans and other technical documents required as a component of the organization's education and certification process.
    • Serve members via requests for information through timely in-person, written, telephone, and email communication.
    • Conduct periodic site visits to assist members with ongoing environmental planning and management activities.
    • Cooperate with AI’s network of partners to ensure that program materials are up-to-date and disseminated to appropriate audiences.

    Outreach & Education

    • In conjunction with other staff members, the Director plays a leading role in marketing and promoting membership in ACSP-Golf as well as all of AI's education and certification programs through direct sales and special events.
    • Develop and conduct seminars, presentations, and informational briefings to help educate AI members (active and prospective) about the benefits of sustainable natural resource management and the efficacy of the organization's approach to environmental stewardship.
    • Promote all AI programs via stakeholder meetings, media interviews, newsletters, and participation in various industry and environmental working groups.
    • Play a leading role in the retention of program membership through the development of relationships with other public and private sector organizations interested in partnering with AI in the delivery of the its education and certification programs.


    • Work with AI staff to develop and implement yearly goals, objectives, strategies, and budget proposals for ACSP Golf programs in conjunction with other programs being implemented by the organization
    • Participate in organization- and program-level strategic planning efforts
    • Coordinate with appropriate AI staff to ensure that information maintained in the organization's web-based member database is up-to-date and accurate
    • Manage staff, including but not limited to, Program Specialist

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • A bachelor's degree in an appropriate field of study (i.e., recreational turf management, horticulture, landscape architecture, natural resource management) with relevant and related professional experience, OR a master's / certificate degree in an appropriate field of study with relevant professional experience
    • Must be dedicated to educating and encouraging golf course superintendents and other types of land managers become actively involved in environmental stewardship projects
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and experience working with diverse constituencies and membership demographics
    • Ability to excel both by working independently and as part of a collaborative team.
    • Strong technical and persuasive writing skills
    • Computer proficiency (i.e., Microsoft Office suite, database management, internet-based research, professional applications of social media
    • Knowledge and/or professional experience in golf course management is highly desirable
    • Experience developing and delivering informational and educational programs in person and/or via virtual tools is desirable
    • Pre-existing professional connections in the golf industry is highly desirable
    • Familiarity with wildlife and ecosystem science (particularly of North America)

    Additional Requirements: 

    The person in this position must be able to:

    • Remain in a stationary position 50% of the time
    • Occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
    • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer
    • Regularly ascends/descends stairs to access office equipment
    • Frequently communicate with members and interested parties who have inquiries, and exchange accurate information in these situations
